Proceed on Dallin, building committee says

The Permanent Town Building Committee voted Dec. 17 to proceed immediately with the restart and redesign of the Dallin school.

The committee would then be prepared to have construction bids by the time of a Town Meeting next May, committee member Suzanne Owayda reported. If Town Meeting appropriates the money, construction would start next July, and completion is expected 18 months later.

The vote was in line with the expectations of the Board of Selectmen, which met with the building and school committees Dec. 9. The School Committee had voted Nov. 26 for a six-month delay, until town officials had a better idea what next year's state budget proposal looks like.

Building Committee member Thomas Caccavarro made the motion to proceed immediately; Robert Juusola seconded it. Voting in favor were committee Chair John Cole, William Shea, Nancy Galkowski, Theresa DeBenedictis, Caccavarro and Juusola. Voting against were Kay Donovan and Owayda.

Owayda wrote in an e-mail that she and Donovan voted no because they think the committee should wait until it has a clearer understanding of the state and town financial condition. "There is a chance that we could spend the money for the design and Town Meeting would not appropriate the money for the construction, and then we would have wasted $400,000 to $500,000," Owayda wrote.
