Meeting Notice

Community Meetings Focus on the Future of
Parmenter School Building, 17 Irving Street &
Crosby School Building, 34 Winter Street
March 10 and March 16

The Town will present two community meetings on a report prepared for the Town by RKG Associates analyzing the existing and potential uses of the Parmenter and Crosby School buildings. The meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, March 10, 7 p.m., at the Crosby School, 34 Winter Street (courtesy of tenant Schools for Children) and Tuesday, March 16, 7 p.m., at the Senior Center, 27 Maple Street.

The school buildings were declared temporary surplus by the School Committee and placed under the temporary control of the Arlington Redevelopment Board (ARB), in accordance with a Town Meeting vote in 1983.  The School Committee and Town Meeting extended the temporary status to 2011. The ARB has managed and leased the Crosby School to Schools for Children, which operates Dearborn Academy at 34 Winter Street.  Long-term tenants The Arlington Children’s Center and International School of Boston lease the Parmenter School from the ARB. The current tenant leases end June 30, 2011 along with the temporary surplus status.  The School Committee must either vote to continue the temporary surplus status, declare the buildings permanently surplus, or make use of them for Arlington public schools purposes.

A review committee appointed by the Town Manager, including a member of the Board of Selectmen, the School Committee, the ARB, and a residential neighbor of each school building, has reviewed and commented on an initial draft.  Tenants of the buildings were also invited to comment on the draft.   The RKG report will be presented and public input will be taken at the March 10th and 16th meetings.  The RKG Report can be viewed at arlingtonma.gov/planning.
