Veterans’ Day Parade - Wednesday, November 11th

The annual Veterans’ Day Parade will be held on Wednesday, November 11, 2009. The parade begins at 10:30 a.m. the Walgreens parking lot on Massachusetts Avenue in East Arlington and proceeds along Mass. Ave. to Monument Square in Arlington center by the Central Fire station. Ceremonies will be held at Monument Square immediately following the parade to honor all those from Arlington who served their country in its’ greatest time of need.

Serving as Chief of Staff this year, is Sergeant First Class William T. Rose, Jr. who was born and raised in Arlington. Sgt. Rose graduated from Arlington High School in 1998. After graduation, he began active duty in the Army with basic training in Ft. Benning, GA, after which he was assigned to Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Upon reenlisting for six years, he was assigned to Ft. Lewis, WA, from where he was deployed twice in support of Iraqi Freedom. He was awarded the Combat Infantryman’s Badge the Soldier’s Medal, the Army Commendation Medal with Valor and two Oak Leaf Clusters and the Bronze Star Medal w/one Oak Leaf Cluster

He is currently serving as a recruiter at the Lowell Army recruiting Station since March 2008.

Other awards consist of: The Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Over Seas Ribbon, Multinational Forces and Observers Medal, along with various unit awards.

McGurl Square Dedication at 1 p.m.
Later in the day, there will be a dedication of “McGurl Square” at 1:00 p.m. The square will consist of the Eugene McGurl Memorial, honoring one of the heroes of “Doolittle’s Raiders” who crash landed after a bombing raid on Tokyo, and a sign to honor the thirteen McGurls of Arlington who served the country in World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. The McGurl Memorial stone is being relocated from its present site on the Donald Marquis bike path to McGurl Square at the corner of Brattle and Summer Streets in Arlington.
