Conservation Comm Minutes 07-24-2003
ARLINGTON CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES
JULY 24, 2003

Mr. Stevens called the meeting to order at 7:30pm at the second floor conference room of the Town Hall Annex. Present were Nathaniel Stevens, David White, Christine Wallace, Timothy Sullivan and Judith Hodges of the Commission. Catherine Garnett was not in attendance.   Aaron Magil and Geraldine Tremblay were present to discuss a project at Meadowbrook Park.  Kristen Anderson was present to discuss work behind the homes on Sunnyside Ave.

7:30pm  MISCELLANEOUS –
White/Sullivan approved the minutes of 7/10 with minor edits; motion passed unanimously.

7:45pm MEADOWBROOK PARK – working session

Aaron Magil, working for Eagle Scout, would like to conduct/lead a troup of Boy Scouts in a trail maintenance project at Meadowbrook Park.  Details were discussed and time frames.  Mr. Magil may include the help of other volunteers but he will still be in charge of the work.  Clearing of brush, disposal and edging would be possible along with placement of woodchips, stair construction.    Commission members will walk the path with Mr. Magil on 7/30 to confirm the layout and length of the proposed project.

8:30m           SUNNYSIDE AVE – working session

Ms. Anderson came in to discuss a broken pipe that drains the access road behind the houses on Sunnyside Ave.  The pipe drains water from the access road to the Alewife Brook.  The pipe had previously been crushed and was blocked.  Nearby dumping of asphalt chunks may have been the cause as well as vehicle traffic.  Ms. Anderson would also like to remove some of the asphalt paving from her back yard in order to have room for plantings.  The Commission would be very pleased to have the pavement removed.  Ms. Anderson will have the asphalt chunks disposed of at an asphalt recycling facility.

MISCELLANEOUS  (cont.) –
The Commission is reviewing the draft municipal NPDES NOI.  Our comments are due this Friday to DPW.  We will propose that an interdepartment committee be formed to review this and the draft stormwater bylaw.

Ms. Hodges attended the 7/22 meeting of the tri-community working group dealing with flooding of the Alewife.  At this meeting, Miriam Anderson from DEM presented information on the FEMA program and Aram Hollman presented the start of his work on the affect of development on the flooding problem.  The next meetings of this group will be 9/9 and 9/23.

Mr. White reported that granite curb pieces were placed at the Arlmont Conservation land and the site was seeded with an upland mix of native plants.  In addition, the trees that were threatening to fall on parked cars, at the Brattle St Conservation land, were removed.

The Commission voted to convene at approximately 9:30pm.
Respectfully submitted,
Cori Beckwith, Administrator
