ARLINGTON CONSERVATION COMMISSION
MINUTES
APRIL 28, 2005
Mr. Sullivan called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. in the second floor conference room of the Town Hall Annex. Present were Judith Hodges, Catherine Garnett, Ellen Reed, Timothy Sullivan, and William O’Rourke of the Commission. Nathaniel Stevens and David White of the Commission were absent. Elizabeth Karpati of the Spy Pond Committee, Linda Hansen and Ken Twombly were also present.
7:30 p.m. - COMMISSION BUSINESS
Mr. Twombly asked the Commission if there was a cleanup planned for Meadowbrook Park this spring. The Commission chose a few possible dates for this cleanup and will send the dates around via email to the Land Stewards group.
Ms. Reed is unable to make the next Muskrat Marsh meeting on 5/3. Ms. Beckwith will attend this meeting on the restoration of a wetland on the Bulfinch property next to Little River.
Ms. Hansen is interested in becoming the Land Steward for the conservation parcel at Stone Road and is also interested in joining the Conservation Commission.
7:45pm – WORKING SESSION – discussion on use of herbicides to control invasive species along shoreline to Spy Pond
Ms. Karpati asked the board questions regarding the control of invasive species along the pathway between Route 2 and Spy Pond. The species present are Norway Maples, Ailanthus, Buckthorn, Multiflora Rose, Garlic Mustard, Poison Ivy, Bittersweet. Ms. Garnett spoke of many of the control methods from memory but also referred Ms. Karpati to the Nature Conservancies website with very detailed information. If herbicides are to be used only a Town employee with the proper pesticide license is allowed to apply this on Town property.
Ms. Garnett is going to the site next week to review the entire project.

Enforcement issued 4/1/05.
Response 4/4/05 to submit plans by 4/25/05
Enforcement reissued 4/7/05 with revised planting deadline of 5/19/05
Planting plan received 4/25/05, presented to Commission on 4/28/05. The Commission discussed the use of Nishiki Willow and Sparkle Berry tree, and the need for the genus species of these plants.
Commission will vote on plan on 5/5/05.
Dudley St –site visit required
17 Mill St – the property is also sweeping sand down the embankment next to Mill Brook. Mr. Stevens and Ms. Garnett will coordinate to communicate with the property manager.
The Commission voted to convene at approximately 9:30 p.m.
