The glass, mercury thermometer in your medicine cabinet can become a hazard if broken. Arlington has been eliminating the health risks posed from this shiny, silver element by collecting mercury thermometers and exchanging them for a new digital thermometer. Please bring your old, glass thermometers to the DPW office at 51 Grove Street, 2nd floor during business hours.
To ensure proper handling of the thermometers, please leave glass thermometers in the plastic case. We are allowing each household to receive one of the digital thermometers, though you may dispose of any number of mercury thermometers.
The exchange program is made possible through the Wheelabrator North Andover Inc. to divert mercury that is contaminating our household waste. For more information, call the Department of Public Works at 316-3108.
