The Arlington Fire Department (AFD) continues upgrades to master fire alarm boxes to a more robust, cost-effective, wireless solution. These master fire alarm boxes, when pulled, transmit to Arlington Fire Dispatch that emergency assistance is needed at, or near that location. The master fire alarm boxes monitor municipal buildings such as schools and Town Hall, elderly housing, and private institutions that pay for the service.
The AFD will be phasing out fire alarm street boxes due to a significant reduction in usage and their cost to maintain. These devices are free standing red boxes or red boxes attached to telephone poles that are stationed around Town. The wide-spread availability of cell phones has made this method of reporting emergencies rare. The system is dated and resources used to maintain these boxes will be used to upgrade to the wireless solution for the master fire boxes which are more widely used.
