Minutes of Board of Youth Services
November 8, 2006
Meeting called to order at 7:10 PM.
Present: Mary Deyst, Elaine Shea, Donna Dolan, Carlene Newell, Larry Greco,
Lynn Horgan, Joan Robbio, ex-officio members Dave McKenna, Elizabeth Oppedisano, and Leon Cantor.
Absent: Dorothy Williams, Gene Lucarelli, and Cindy Sheridan
Minutes of meeting October 11, 2006. Amendments:
-Under First Step to read, “Elaine Shea and Mary Deyst reported ….”
-In New Business to read, “ Mary Deyst asked the board …”
-Present at meeting. Add Larry Greco.
Motion to accept minutes as amended by Elaine Shea. Seconded by Lynn Horgan. Approved unanimously.
Christine Connolly, Director of Health and Human Services was introduced and presented information.
Budget: Review and learning process related to budgets. Looking forward in terms of 5 year plan and what will happen after that point. Goal to have departments self-sufficient for budget process.
Community Coalition Initiative: Focus on teen stress, mental health, and alcohol. Winchester model of grant funding; cooperative effort with Winchester. BYS participation. Donna Dolan will represent the Board. Suggestion to involve Minuteman High.
Committee Reports:
CAP: Jeannette Mills reported that letters were sent to town-wide audience. School Committee created a sub-committee for review of CAP.
Larry Greco suggested that Board members attend PTO meetings to answer questions; Board follow up with town-wide PTO.
First Step: Mary Deyst and Elaine Shea reporting.
? They attended a program on the effects of battering on women and families.
? Took the group to Respect in Boston and to lunch. Money raised by Jack Bowler.
? Invited to MFA by former group member to documentary on NEAD dog training involving her son.
AYCC: Leon Cantor reporting.
? Interns and school based expansion doing well with some logistical difficulties around space and supplies. Student needs are great and interns are very busy.
? Leon now consulting on a regular basis with Georgia Chute of the Special Ed. Dept.
? Art therapy training once a month for all graduate interns.
? Harvard Law Mediation program to be explored as Arlington resource.
SADD: Elizabeth Oppedisano reporting.
? 145 students on board. Party for group with ice cream donation from Brighams.
? SADD day scheduled for 12/21/06 at AHS.
? SADD will have a pre and post test for participants to measure program impact.
BYS Policies and Procedures To consider at next meeting.
Other Business:
- First Parent Forum on internet safety will be held on 12/4/06 in the AHS teachers’ cafeteria.
- Next meeting scheduled for Wednesday, January 10, 2007.
Motion to adjourn by Elaine Shea, seconded by Jeannette Mills, unanimously approved at 8:50 pm.
