Reports: Carlene Newell reported on: Parent forum in January was a success; Teen dating violence classes will take place this month for the freshman at AHS, and the Yellow Dress will follow on February 13th at 9 am; RAD training for senior girls; Student support team at AHS to help students in need; Impact program assembly at AHS – a 2 hour work shop for volunteers.
Donna Dolan brought up Lee Willman’s book “My Quarter Life Crisis” a first person account on anxiety in young adults.
CAP: Lynn Horgan reported that she had talked to Sean Garballey and he suggested a presentation to a School Committee sub-committee headed by Kathy Fennelly. Chair will make contact to request a date. Perhaps do CAP role plays for the sub-committee.
First Step: Elaine Shea and Mary Deyst reported on meeting with Police Chief Ryan, which went well and affirmed his support for the program. Elaine and Mary attended a Police role call and will attend more of these to inform uniformed officers of their work. Elaine also reported on the First Step holiday party, a great success, with many wonderful donations for their dinner.
AYCC: Leon reported the following: The year is progressing smoothly after some initial bumps. The school based component is seeing more than 500 students. Concern about future budgets when the 5 year stabilization plan comes to an end. This will be in two years time. Consider ways to address gap between funds generated and town funding.
Harvard Mediation program presentation to take place on January 25, 2007 at 8:30 am.
Youth Health and Safety Coalition. Donna Dolan to represent the Board in future.
Alcohol Awareness: Elizabeth reported on the following: SADD assembly with multi-media presentation was well received. There are 108 students involved in SADD. The group has designed new t-shirt logos. MADD office in Texas awarded Arlington 9 grants, one assembly for each public school in Arlington. Brackett, Dallin, Bishop, and Peirce are completed. Others will be done in the spring, although there is question as to whether Thompson School will have this assembly.
Training for peer counselors will begin soon, and is seeking 70 students.
Policies and Procedures: Review of these documents as part of historical overview and mission review of the Board. Discussion touched on accomplishments of the Board, areas that have been taken over and sustained by other entities, questions as to the purpose of the Board in the past, present and future. Possibility of a mission oriented retreat was discussed. Elaine Shea moved that a retreat date be set at the next meeting; seconded by Larry Greco; approved unanimously.
New Business: It was announced that Mike McCabe will be retiring at the end of the school year from the Thompson School.
Larry moved that the Board make a contribution in memory of Ed Mahoney that is consistent with the family’s wishes. This will be determined at the next meeting.
Next Board meeting set for Thursday, February 15, 2007.
Larry Greco moved to adjourn; seconded by Carlene Newell; unanimously approved.
