HEARING: Arlington Infant Toddler Center (AITC)- Inspector Feeney presented information on the AITC request for a variance in order to continue use of a portable sink for use after changing a baby’s diaper. The AITC Director Afshar, Assistant Director, Nancy Butts and Counsel Michael Levin were present for the hearing. Counsel Levin stated that the portable sink meets health/safety requirements, there is a person available at all times to empty the sink and refill it when needed and also that the church does not want the AITC to install a sink because the building is so old. The Board unanimously approved a temporary variance until the next meeting at which time, the AITC will have 3 quotes from local plumbers for installation of a permanent sink. The next meeting date is September 8, 2010 at 5:30pm
MEETING: Inspector Feeney and Director Connolly presented the history of the property violations at 128 Madison Ave. Feeney reported that there have been many complaints from neighbors and residents regarding debris and hoarding at the site. During the most recent visit to the property, additional photos documented debris in the windows of the basement from the floor to the ceiling. Connolly recommended that the BOH obtain an administrative search warrant to document all potential violations inside the property, outside, and in the garage. Violations will be documented, property owner will be given 7 days to correct all violations and failure to correct violations will result in a civil complaint in superior court which will result in fines against the owner up to one thousand dollars for every day that
he violates the order.
Director Connolly reported that the Youth Health and Safety Coalition is working with the police and recreation department to offer a summer camp for kids. Connolly also reported that the department will be using a new larvacide this year that contains two main ingredients that when together will prevent the growth of the human biting mosquitoes and will also deal with mosquito resistance to larvacide. Application will occur in July. Connolly also reported that an application had been made to the Sanborn Foundation for funding for a staff person to run tobacco control activities. Specifically, the person will conduct 4 compliance checks per year and will work directly with the Housing Authority to look into establishing smoke free housing within the Housing Authority units. Connolly reported also that
Dr. Carole Allen had inquired about the possibility of Arlington banning the sale of tobacco in pharmacies. The board agreed that this is an important step that should be taken and that it has been working well in Needham, Newton, Boston and Everett.
Inspector Feeney provided restaurant updates to the board. Feeney reported that there had been reports of a fraudulent food inspector that had been contacting Arlington establishments, a memo was sent to all establishments warning them of this. Feeney reported that the Farmer’s Market was now in operation, the Greek Festival had occurred, and two new establishments were opening soon: Chefco on Medford Street and Comella’s at the corner of Lake Street and Mass Ave. Feeney also reported that Kayuga II is changing ownership and Gemma is expanding into Krazy Karry’s.
