WATER SYSTEM MAINTENANCE CRAFTSMAN

Definition
Skilled technical and laboring work in repairing, maintaining, and servicing the town water  and sewer  systems, and in the operation and preventive maintenance of specialized equipment; all other related work, as required.

Supervision
Works under the general supervision of the Foreman, who provides oral and written instructions.

Performs responsible duties in accordance with established procedures and techniques, requiring the use of judgment in evaluating problem conditions and in determining repair methods, and operating machinery. Unusual cases are referred to the supervisor for review.

Work Environment
Most work is performed outside, with exposure to constant loud noise and potential exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, and equipment with moving mechanical parts, and in confined spaces; outdoor work may be performed in adverse weather conditions, with exposure to hazards associated with chemicals, trenches, construction sites, near moving mechanical parts and equipment operation. Workload is subject to seasonal and unplanned fluctuations; the employee is frequently on call after hours and is required to respond to emergency situations.

The employee operates hand, power, and pneumatic tools, light and heavy trucks, jack hammers, sewer cleaning equipment, tapping machines, and various pipe cutting tools.

The employee has routine contact with other departments and town employees.

Errors could result in injury to self and others, delay or loss of service, damage to equipment or private property, and monetary loss.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical

Installs, maintains, and services the water and sewer system; locates and repairs water and sewer  mains; lays water pipe, installs, repairs, and replaces lines; may plow snow.

Responds with crew to water line breaks and undertakes necessary manual work to begin repair of line; ensures that joints are properly sealed, bed trench is properly prepared and backfilled accordingly.


Repairs hydrants and installs new hydrants; maintains sewer chambers and cleans sewer lines; changes water meters.

Installs, repairs and replaces fire hydrants; installs, repairs and replaces water meters.

Performs similar or related work as required, or as situation dictates.

Recommended Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience
High school diploma; three years of experience in construction and/or a  public water system maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Additional Requirements
Valid Massachusetts Commercial Drivers License, Class B
Grade 1 Water Operators License

Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Considerable knowledge of the operating and maintenance procedures of the municipal water supply system. Knowledge of operation and repair of motor equipment. General knowledge of the layout of the town.

Ability to perform strenuous laboring work. Ability to assemble, disassemble, and repair hydrants and water meters. Ability to isolate and repair broken water mains. Ability to use common sense in applying safety practices.

Good mathematics skills. Mechanical skills. Skill in operating various types of water works related equipment.

Physical Requirements
Moderate to strenuous physical effort is generally required to perform duties. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, speak and hear, use hands to operate equipment, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch and reach with hands and arms. The employee is routinely required to lift objects weighing up to 60 pounds. Vision requirements include the ability to read routine documents and operate motor vehicles and other equipment.
