The Town of Arlington has a strong commitment to affordable housing for its residents and employees. Following is a list of the Town’s housing programs. All programs have income eligibility limits. (see page 2)
RENTAL HOUSING PROGRAMS
Two Family Rental Program: The Town works closely with the non-profit Housing Corporation of Arlington (HCA), a community development corporation. HCA currently owns 46 units of rental housing for families and small households, within 14 two family houses and 4 larger buildings scattered throughout Arlington. Units vary in size from one to four bedrooms. Rents start at $750/month for a 1bedroom apartment, $950 for a two bedroom apartment. For more information or an application, contact David Levy, Executive Director of HCA, at 781 316-3429. Or visit the Arlington Housing Corporation website.
Arlington Housing Authority Public Housing. The Arlington Housing Authority owns and operates 175 units of affordable family housing, and roughly 500 units of affordable elderly housing. Family housing has 2 or 3 bedrooms, and elderly housing has one bedroom. Residents pay 30% of their income for rent regardless of their income. For more information or an application, contact the Arlington Housing Authority, located at 4 Winslow Street, 781 646-3400.
FIRST TIME HOMEBUYERS
Affordable Condominiums for first time homebuyers. Arlington’s zoning requires all new developments with six or more units to include 15% affordable to low and moderate income households. Purchase prices range from $150,000 to $200,000, with resale prices similarly restricted. Purchasers are selected by lottery, and must attend a class for First Time Homebuyers (see below). For more information, or to be placed on a mailing list, contact Laura Wiener, Arlington Director of Housing, at 781 316-3091. or lwiener@town.arlington.ma.us .
First Time Homebuyers Downpayment Assistance and Counseling Program. Arlington is part of a Consortium of 7 municipalities that together run a program providing assistance to first time homebuyers. The Homebuyers Counseling program is open to people of any income. Income eligible families can also qualify for down payment assistance and deferred second mortgages (a second mortgage for up to 20% of the purchase price with no repayment for 5 years). For more information, or to register for the First Time Homebuyers Counseling Class, contact Dennis Falcione, at 781 324-5720. EMERGENCY HOUSING ASSISTANCE
Homelessness Prevention. The Town, in conjunction with the Housing Corporation of Arlington, runs a program that provides small grants to individuals facing an immediate crisis with their housing. It can pay back rent to prevent eviction, or security deposits to get someone into a new home. This program is funded entirely from private donations of Arlington residents, solicited once per year.
