The Bureau houses General Detectives, the Prosecution Unit, Narcotics Unit, Family Services Unit, Sexual Assault Unit, and the School Resource Officer. A Lieutenant commands the Bureau.
Specially trained officers in the Bureau are responsible for investigating crimes, and unusual occurrences within the Town of Arlington. The detectives conduct follow up investigations in an effort to detect and apprehend criminal offenders. In addition to their investigative duties, detectives register and monitor sex offenders residing and working in Arlington, provide crisis intervention, support victims of crimes, and provide a link to many services offered by the Town and Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The Bureaus also conducts background investigations for the issuance of pistol permits and is available by appointment to conduct fingerprinting services to residents of the Town.
Detectives have received special training in Narcotics, Crime Scene Processing, Domestic Violence, Identity Theft, Fingerprint Identification and Processing, Sexual Assault Investigations, Gang and Graffiti Awareness, Bias Crime Investigation, Evidence Management, and Alcohol Enforcement to list a few.
Arlington Detectives participate in the monthly NEMLEC Detectives meetings and are a member of the Suburban Middlesex County Drug Task Force. The Task Force is collaborative effort of the following police departments to curtail narcotics in their communities: Arlington, Lexington, Belmont, Waltham, Watertown, Newton, Weston, and Lincoln. To date, the Task Force has successfully prosecuted hundreds of drugs cases in the above local communities and confiscated thousands of dollars in cash and forfeitures.
