  • Introduction: Town and MyRWA Receive $135,000 Grant for Green Infrastructure

The Town of Arlington and the Mystic River Watershed Association (MyRWA) are co-hosting a green infrastructure public meeting on Tuesday, December 3rd at 7:00 PM in the Senior Center, Main Room, 27 Maple Street, Arlington. Staff from MyRWA and from the Town’s Engineering Department and Department of Planning and Community Development will provide strategies residents can adopt to reduce stormwater pollution and update the community on ways the Town is improving stormwater quality through infrastructure improvements.

In August 2019, the Town and MyRWA were awarded a $135,000 Coastal Pollutant Remediation Grant from the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management (CZM) to educate the community about and install green infrastructure. Green infrastructure techniques manage water through systems that mimic natural water cycles, rather than through conventional piped or "gray" infrastructure.

The Town installed two green infrastructure rain gardens at the intersection of Egerton Road and Herbert Road this past Spring, where plantings beautified the streetscape and provided traffic calming features. The Town also installed 11 infiltration trenches along Park Street and Beacon Street this past Spring. Two more rain gardens will be installed at the intersections of Milton Street and Herbert Road and Milton Street and Brooks Avenue with funds from the CZM grant. Infiltration trenches will also be installed underground throughout East Arlington to filter pollutants prior to the stormwater reaching existing storm drains.

For more information, contact Environmental Planner/Conservation Agent Emily Sullivan at esullivan@town.arlington.ma.us or 781-316-3012. Additional information is in the MyRWA press release.
