Information Session on Arlington's ADA Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan

  • Date: 06/25/2020 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
  • Location: Remote Participation

Hosted by representatives of the Disability Commission, HHS, Department of Planning and Community Development, and IHCD on June 25, 2020

The Town of Arlington’s Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan was prepared in an effort to assess the current level of ADA compliance in services, activities, and programs in Town-owned facilities, and provide a comprehensive list of the necessary improvements, the estimated cost, and a timeline to implement the improvements.

The public is invited to a virtual public information session on the Plan June 25th at 6:00pm via Zoom hosted by Arlington’s Disability Commission, Health and Human Services Department and Department of Planning and Community Development. Jennifer Raitt, Director of Planning and Community Development, will provide an overview of how the plan was developed and how the plan will be used. Valerie Fletcher and Meghan Dufresne from The Institute for Human Centered Design (IHCD), the Town’s consultant, will present a review of the report, and address questions and concerns that attendees may have in relation to accessibility at Town-owned facilities and access to programs and services.

The IHCD assessment included 27 public buildings. Facilities surveyed include four (4) public safety buildings, 12 public school facilities, two (2) libraries, two (2) facilities managed by the Arlington Redevelopment Board, one (1) cemetery building, one (1) Recreation Department facility, and five (5) Town-owned buildings. A complete evaluation of the Town’s web site and policies, practices and procedures is included in the report. In addition, IHCD evaluated previous reports on 33 recreation facilities; pedestrian push button and pedestrian ramps; and sidewalks, ramps, curbs and street trees to provide additional information on cost and a prioritization plan. The work from the referenced reports was reviewed and incorporated into the complete Town self-evaluation and prioritized by importance especially through the lens of the Town’s primary ADA responsibility to ensure program accessibility.

The preparation of the Self-Evaluation and Transition Plan was funded with a Municipal Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Improvement Grant from the Massachusetts Office of Disability in the amount of $40,000 and matching funds from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program.
