The 2020 Census is Here

Town Resources Available to Answer Questions and Help Residents Respond.

Post Date:03/20/2020 11:10 AM
By now, all Arlington households have received one or more official invitations by mail to take the 2020 Census. It has never been easier or more important to take the Census. Residents can respond on their own, whether online, over the phone or by mail—all without having to meet a census taker. With the flexibility and support of Arlington residents, we will achieve a complete and accurate count which helps guide funding decisions for things like health centers, roads and emergency services.

The invitation includes a Census ID and instructions for responding online. Residents can also respond online by providing their address instead of their Census ID. If individuals need help or would like to respond by phone, they can call a toll-free phone number provided on the invitation. Both phone and online options are available in 13 languages, and assistance in many more languages is available on

While in-person support from the Town is temporarily suspended due to COVID-19, the Town has posted guides for how to respond to the Census in nine languages plus a large-print version in English on the Complete Count Working Group website. To request a paper copy of the guide or a version in another language, please contact Kelly Lynema, Senior Planner and Coordinator of the Complete Count Working Group at 781-316-3096 or via email at

“We are encouraging residents to call or get online to take the 2020 Census as soon as they receive their first invitation,” said Adam Chapdelaine, Town Manager. “The sooner residents respond, the more likely the Town is to get a complete count and ensure we get our fair share of federal resources.”

Mandated by the U.S. Constitution, the Census is a once-in-a-decade count of every person living in the United States, regardless of their citizenship or immigration status. The 2020 Census asks nine questions and takes less than ten minutes to complete. The information you provide on the Census is confidential and protected by federal law. Your answers can only be used to produce statistics and cannot be used against you by any government agency or court.

Census data is used to determine legislative districts, determine state representation in Congress, calculate how federal funding is allocated to states and municipalities, and develop vital information that helps us understand our town, attract new businesses, and identify areas of need for support services, health care, and more.
