Civic Academies are community engagement and educational opportunities conducted by municipalities across the country to encourage civic engagement and provide educational materials for the public on how Town government operates. In the fall of 2026 Arlington will conducting its seventh Civic Academy.  

Participants will gain knowledge of how the Town works and the role they can play in town government.  

Each course will provide an overview of government operations led by Town officials with discussion and/or a hands-on activity. The Civic Academy is geared to provide information to those who are interested in joining a Town committee or may want to run for Town Meeting or other elected office. 

Academy Overview  

• Meet six consecutive weeks, Thursday evenings, 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., September 24th – October 29th 

• Enrollment of up to 20 participants. 

• Classes will be held in ADA accessible municipal buildings in Arlington. 

• Snacks will be available. 

Curriculum Overview (subject to change) 

• Sept. 24 Overview of Town governance and Town operations.  

• Oct. 1: Town Budget & Finance, and Arlington Public Schools 

• Oct. 8: Public Works, Inspectional Services, and Fire  

• Oct. 15: Health & Human Services, Department of Planning and Community Development, and Police 

• Oct. 22: Libraries, Recreation, and Town Clerk/How to Get Involved 

• Oct. 29: Graduation 

Requirements for Participation:  

Must be a current resident of Arlington.
