In celebration of the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Town of Arlington is launching a new adaptive tricycle rental program designed to make the Minuteman Bikeway more accessible to residents with disabilities.
The program, made possible through a $186,000 grant from the Massachusetts Office on Disability, offers specially designed three-wheeled bicycles that provide enhanced stability and support for individuals who have difficulty riding traditional two-wheeled bikes.
The program was developed through a partnership among the Arlington Disability Commission, the Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Division of Health and Human Services, and the Recreation Department.
The adaptive tricycles will be available for rent in two-hour increments at no cost through the end of the season. Residents can reserve tricycles through the Recreation Department. The location of the tricycle facility at Ed Burns Arena provides convenient access to the Minuteman Bikeway.
These specialized tricycles feature enhanced stability with a wider wheelbase and low center of gravity, adjustable seats with backrests, safety straps, and other supportive features that accommodate various physical abilities and needs.
Adaptive tricycles offer numerous benefits including improved muscle strength, coordination, balance, and cardiovascular health. The program provides a safer and more versatile way for riders with disabilities to experience cycling, promoting social interaction and building confidence.
Residents are invited to join a community celebration and exhibition on August 7th from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Ed Burns Arena parking lot (422 Summer St, Arlington, MA 02474). Light refreshments will be served, and RSVPs are encouraged. All community members are welcome.
“The Adaptive Tricycle Rental Program helps ensure that residents with disabilities can safely and fully enjoy the Minuteman Bikeway, one of Arlington’s most cherished public spaces,” said Ramsha Baluch, Arlington’s Director of DEI. “We strive to build a community where everyone feels valued, included, and able to participate fully. This program is a meaningful step toward a more accessible and welcoming town for all who live, work, or spend time in Arlington.”
