The Town of Arlington is alerting residents, contractors, and local businesses about an active email phishing scam involving fraudulent requests for payment related to municipal permits. The fraudulent email appears to come from a Town official seeking payment.
The Town of Arlington will never request sensitive personal information, passwords, or financial payments, ESPECIALLY WIRE TRANSFERS, via an unsolicited email.
Avoid Being Scammed
Pay careful attention to the sender and the reply to email. Was the email sent from a known domain? Also make sure that the email address is not a visual spoof of a known domain, such as "dornain[.]com" rather than "domain[.]com.”
-
Watch out for suspicious domains, such as @micorsoft-support[.]com, that resemble legitimate domains, such as @microsoft[.]com.
-
Look for grammar mistakes, and different use of fonts. Pay close attention to the characters in the email address. For example an A instead of an O, U instead of an A, or 0 instead of an O.
