Big News: Paper Cups Are Now Recyclable!
The materials recovery facilities (MRFs) serving MA have officially moved ALL paper cups to the recycling YES list!
They were previously not recyclable because of the thin, protective, plastic layer inside them (called a poly-coat), but thanks to improved technology, paper mills can now separate this coating from the paper.
Mass Department of Environmental Protection is excited to get the word out - please help spread the good news
This change applies to paper cups, cold paper drink cups, and hot coffee paper cups. This includes paper cups labeled as "compostable".
What about freezer boxes, paper plates, and other coated paper products? These are still not accepted in curbside recycling.
Paper plates, takeout containers, and food boats/trays are likely to have food on them. If the item is labeled "compostable" then it can be included in your curbside food scrap diversion cart. If it is not labeled "compostable" or if you do not participate in subscription curbside food scrap collection, then place these items in the trash.
Wet strength boxes, like frozen food boxes, are designed to withstand moisture on all sides and have an embedded coating that makes them hard to break down.
