Respiratory Illness Prevention Tips

Take steps to prevent the spread of flu and other viruses

Post Date:01/13/2026 3:56 PM

The Health Department would like to remind residents of ways to prevent the spread of illness as we are experiencing high levels of influenza (flu) and other respiratory illnesses throughout the community. The following practices can help prevent you and your loved ones from getting sick this season.

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water
  • Stay home when sick
  • Cover coughs and sneezes
  • Consider wearing a mask in crowded indoor settings, especially if you or a loved one is at higher risk
  • Stay up to date on flu and COVID-19 vaccinations

Vaccinations are encouraged, especially for high-risk individuals. Individuals at high risk of complications from respiratory illness include people under two or over 65 years of age, pregnant people, immunocompromised individuals, and people with chronic illnesses. Vaccines are effective at lowering the risk of severe illness and hospitalization from respiratory illness. Appointments to get a flu or COVID-19 shot can also be made at local pharmacies or through your primary care physician. More information about available vaccines can be found online at www.vaccinefinder.org.

More information about preventing the spread of illness can be found on the MA Department of Public Health’s website or by calling the Health Department at (781) 316-3170.
