The Town of Arlington is pleased to share that a $1,092,000 earmark has been secured through the federal Community Project Funding/Congressional Directed Spending process to tackle stormwater pollution in the Mystic River watershed. This investment, made possible by the tremendous efforts of House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark’s office and the Massachusetts congressional delegation, substantiates the Town's dedication to environmental stewardship and community well-being. In partnership with the Mystic River Watershed Association, the Town will use the funds to safeguard and enhance the water quality of the Mystic River and other water bodies, benefiting both the environment and the residents who live along its banks.
“Stormwater pollution is a significant challenge for our waterways, leading to water quality issues, harming aquatic life, and even impacting recreational activities,” said Arlington Town Manager, Jim Feeney. “Implementing green infrastructure helps to mitigate these problems.”
Green infrastructure includes infiltration trenches, tree trenches, and rain gardens, which are designed to absorb and filter stormwater, reducing runoff and nutrient pollution.
Work from these federal funds will focus on identifying and prioritizing municipally-owned properties within the Mystic River watershed that are ideal for green stormwater infrastructure installations. By working with the Mystic River Watershed Association and other municipalities, the Town can share knowledge, resources, and best practices to promote widespread adoption of green infrastructure solutions. The Mystic River Watershed Association will play a key role in managing the project, ensuring that it stays on track and meets its goals. Their expertise in grant management, reporting, and stakeholder engagement will be invaluable in driving the success of this initiative.
This award follows the receipt of approximately $950k in FY25 for the same purpose and helps the Town’s goal to enhance resilient urban ecosystems that benefit both people and the environment. Learn more about the
