Update #9: August 24, 2026

Paving work is planned for the Decatur Street and North Union Street project area August 26-27th, pending weather. This work will also include a short segment of paving on Everett Street between Broadway and Ernest Road to repair sunken roadway trenches. Residents and visitors are reminded to adhere to No Parking Signs, roadway detours, and other construction notifications as applicable. Following paving, work in this neighborhood will be substantially complete, though the installation of pavement markings, cleanup work, and minor repairs may continue over the following weeks.

Update #8: August 7, 2026

Paving work is planned to begin in the Jason Street project area starting Monday, August 10th.  Work will begin at the Massachusetts Avenue/Jason Street/Mill Street intersection on Monday and continue for 1-2 additional days in the project area until all paving is complete. Permanent pavement marking work (i.e. crosswalks, center lines, etc.) will be completed within a few weeks of the final paving.

Curb and sidewalk work is continuing on Decatur Street and North Union Street. Resurfacing is currently anticipated in approximately two weeks.

Update #7: July17, 2026

Select curb and sidewalk construction is expected to begin on Jason Street and Irving Street the week of July 27th and to last for approximately two weeks. This will include curb ramp work at the Massachusetts Avenue/Jason Street/Mill Street intersection. Temporary pedestrian detours and/or temporary pedestrian travel paths may be utilized to minimize pedestrian travel impacts. Please follow posted signage and the directions of Traffic Safety Police Details when present.

Curb and sidewalk work is continuing on Decatur Street and beginning on North Union Street. It is anticipated that approximately 3-4 weeks of curb and sidewalk work remains.

Final paving will be completed at both locations following the completion of the curb and sidewalk work. Final paving is tentatively planned for mid-August.

Update #6: June 30, 2026

Jason Street (from Mass Ave to Gray St) and Irving Street (from Jason St to Bartlett Ave) have also been added to the 2026 Road Rehabilitation Project. The scope of work will primarily consist of milling and paving work, with select sidewalk and curbing improvements. Milling work will begin on July 6th between the hours of 7AM - 5PM and is anticipated to be completed in 2-3 days. Select curb and sidewalk improvements will follow and are expected to take 2 weeks, followed by final paving.

Temporary lane closures and/or adjustments are anticipated during construction, particularly during milling and paving operations in the Mass Ave and Jason St intersection. Traffic Safety Police Details will be on site to provide assistance to pedestrians and vehicle operators. Travel delays are anticipated during work hours and it is recommended that vehicle operators seek alternate routes if possible. 

Update #5: June 26, 2026

Decatur Street and North Union Street (from Decatur Street to approximately Norcross Street) have been added to the 2026 Road Rehabilitation Project. The scope of work will be similar to that completed in the Gardner-Silk area, and will include upgrades to existing curb and sidewalks, as well as full width road repaving. Sidewalk will not be added to sections of North Union that currently do not have sidewalk. Please note that project extents may be adjusted (for lesser or greater) as budget allows. Preliminary work began June 26th and construction is anticipated to begin as soon as June 29th.  

Final paving work was completed in the Gardner-Silk Project area on June 25th. Hydroseeding of impacted areas around the new sidewalk is planned for the week of June 26th. Residents may also observe the contractor completing minor repair and/or punchlist items in the area through the coming weeks.

Update #4: June 24, 2026

Final paving work has been rescheduled to Thursday, June 25th due to weather delays earlier in the week. Residents are once again advised to move vehicles out of their driveways by 7AM on the day of final paving as access to and from driveways will be limited during paving operations.

Update #3: June 22, 2026

Final paving work is scheduled for Wednesday, June 24th, on Gardner Street, Hilton Street, Hadley Court, and Silk Street. Work is weather dependent and the date of paving may shift one day for each day of significant rain experienced prior to June 24th. Residents are advised to move vehicles out of their driveways by 7AM on the day of final paving as access to and from driveways will be limited during paving operations. Residents may continue to park on nearby side streets while access to driveways is restricted. Residents, pedestrians, and vehicle operators are reminded to follow all posted construction signage and the directions of Traffic Safety Police Details during paving operations.

Update #2: June 5, 2026

Sidewalk installation and roadway structure adjustment work is nearing completion on Gardner Street, Hilton Street, and Hadley Court. Final paving on these streets is projected to occur as early as Wednesday, June 10th, pending weather. During final paving operations, there will be periods of time that residents will not be able to enter or exit their driveways. It is requested that residents move any vehicles they will need to access by 7:00 AM of the morning of final paving and expect that vehicles will not be able to return until approximately 4:00 PM of that day. When access to driveway is restricted, residents may continue to park on nearby side streets.

Sidewalk and curb construction work is anticipated to begin on Silk Street during the week of June 8th. Residents should expect to receive notice from the contractor 1-2 days ahead of work that may impact access to residential driveways on Silk Street. When access is restricted to driveways, residents may park on nearby side streets.

Update #1: May 11, 2026

Milling and leveling work has been completed on the initial project streets. Curb and sidewalk work is to begin the week of May 11th. Work will initial be completed on Gardner Street, and is expected to be followed by Hilton Street, Hadley Court, and Silk Street in that order. Residents should expect to receive notice from the contractor 1-2 days ahead of work that may impact access to residential driveways. When access is restricted to driveways, residents may park on nearby side streets. The Arlington Police Department is aware of the work and should not be ticketing for overnight parking violations.

Project Summary

The Town of Arlington, through its contractor Newport Construction, will be performing a Road Rehabilitation Project during the 2026 construction season. Road Rehabilitation work will consist of preliminary pavement preparation and final road resurfacing. Preliminary pavement preparation may include pavement excavation/milling, asphalt leveling (a base course of pavement), structure adjustments, and installation of and/or improvements to curb and sidewalks. Final road resurfacing will consist of the placement of a top course of pavement.

The initial phase of work is planned on Gardner Street (Broadway to Fremont Street), Hilton Street, Hadley Court, and Silk Street (Broadway to Michael Street). Work for this project phase is anticipated to begin the week of April 27th and last for 12-16 weeks. Allowable work hours will typically be 7:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Please note that the anticipated work schedule is dependent upon weather conditions and other contractor commitments.

Additional phases of work are anticipated to be completed as the construction season progresses.  Projected locations for this additional work tentatively include Academy Street (Maple Street to Irving Street) and Jason Street (Massachusetts Avenue to Gray Street) with work tentatively expected during the summer months to minimize traffic impacts. Additional locations may be added pending project budget and contractor availability. Updates will be provided prior to work in any of these additional project locations.
