On July 1, the fee to have a mattress recycled will become $55 per unit. The fee is the same for both curbside collection or drop off. Residents arrange for curbside pickup through the Town's recycling partner, toughstuffrecycling.com. In order for residents to drop off mattresses and box springs at the Reuse & Recycle Center, they will need to make a weekday or weekend appointment at arlingtonma.gov/recycle

According to the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, roughly three-quarters of all mattress and box spring components can be easily disassembled and recycled. The recovered materials are then used to manufacture a variety of new products. Mattresses have been required to be recycled by state law since Nov. 1, 2022.
