Collecting food scraps to compost requires easy access to a sturdy container. It sure helps if that containers is easy to fill, carry and clean.

DPW sells an easy-to-use plastic container we hope will encourage more residents to try composting at home. Or, you can use these containers to collect food scraps after a meal, then empty it into your subscription-service containers.

The lid stays open while you fill it, and snaps tightly shut in case the container is knocked over or dropped on the way to your compost pile. The handle is wide and comfortable for carrying when heavy with food scraps. The perforated lid means that air can flow through, allowing natural dehydration of wet material as well as the prevention of anaerobic conditions that cause food waste to smell. The design is also intended to make cleaning it easy. This is a big improvement over other sink-side bins at the same price. We are selling these at cost for $5.00 each, cash or check only, here at DPW during regular business hours.

If you are interested in composting for the first time, or deepening your understanding of composting,be on the lookout for classes and workshops offered by Arlington Community Education. Next class is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 4 in the evening, here's the site for registration.
