We need everyone in Arlington to keep all that soft plastic out of the curbside recycling bin.
That's the way to keep the recycling clean. It's also the way to keep the recycling facility employees safe: Soft plastic bags get wound around the moving parts of the sorting facility, making the machinery gunk up. The only way to remove that plastic is to shut down the machines and have employees climb up (up to three stories high) and hand-cut the plastic bags off the pulleys and spinning parts- this is dangerous work!
What's the average life of a single use plastic grocery bag?
Yes, soft plastic are everywhere, they're hard to avoid, but you do have choices.
First, REFUSE to use single use plastic bags- bring your own bags to the grocery store with you. For small purchases, carry out your few items in your hands. A simple "no bag, thank you" works great.
Second, REUSE your plastic grocery bags as grocery bags- again and again.
Third, RECYCLE your plastic grocery bag at the grocery stores- all of Arlington's grocery store have a place to do this, just ask if you don't see it right away.
Then, tell others. Give reusable bags as gifts, remind your family members, keep the car trunk stocked with reusable bags... however you do it, make it easy on yourself until it becomes second nature.
And all that other soft plastic that frozen veggies, pasta and snack food come in? Educate yourself about what is recyclable at the grocery store and what is not, call us at DPW with your questions, and
