Recycle More at the monthly Recycling Center at Arlington DPW, 51 Grove Street.
Event runs one Saturday a month from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
In October and May we host some bonus collections:
See the Recycling Center in action in the video above.
Here are the usual materials you can bring to all the monthly Recycling Center events:
- Bulky rigid plastic items- laundry baskets, storage crates and containers, trash and recycling barrels and bins, large children's play equipment, CD/DVD cases (remove liners and discs, those go in recycling and trash, respectively), and disassembled infant/toddler car seats (instructions on the Town's website)
- Foam packaging- white packing foam that snaps when you bend it, like a cooler Place all other non-eligible foam in the trash. We can no longer accept packing peanuts.
- Textiles- this includes clothing (wearable or not), sheets, towels, table linens, curtains, shoes and belts.
- Books and media- including paperbacks, hardcover books, and pre-recorded movies and music. Encyclopedia sets are not accepted.
- Electronic waste- We charge $20 per television and computer monitor and $5 per laptop, and all other electronic waste is free to recycle. Electronic waste can also be dropped off for recycling at DPW during our regular business hours (Monday through Wednesday, and Friday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM; Thursday 8:00 a.m. - 7 PM). The same electronic fees apply on weekdays and at the Recycling Center. No large appliances are accepted; those are collected at the curb for a $20 fee and by pre-arrangement with the hauler, JRM, by calling 1-800-323-4285.
- Scrap metal
- Propane tanks up to 20 lbs. - the typical size used for gas grills. We also accept the small camping size propane tanks.
- Batteries: rechargeable, button cell, lithium, nickel cadmium, UPS and lead acid batteries (not alkaline- those go in the trash)
- Ink and toner cartridges
- Plastic grocery bags- clean and dry only. You can also include bread bags, dry cleaner bags, shipping air pillows and bubble wrap.
Please do not bring regular curbside recyclables to the Recycling Center, keep those at home for our curbside program, which accepts an unlimited amount of recycling each week. Check out the Recycling and Trash Guide for further explanation about what is recyclable in our curbside program.

Why are we hosting the monthly Recycling Center?
Here are some answers to common questions.
- Foam weighs next to nothing, why recycle it? Foam may not be heavy, but it takes up lots of space in the trucks. What if we can reduce the foam (and other recyclable materials) we place in the trash, could we reduce the number of trucks driving around Town each week, saving fossil fuel emissions, among other environmental benefits? Plus it's a useful material. Let's reuse as many of our resources as we can before we extract new ones from the earth.
- Can't rigid plastic already be recycled? Yes, but not at the curb. Arlington strives to give our residents access to as many waste-diverting opportunities as possible. Sorted rigid plastic is more highly valued than mixed recycling, too.
- Electronics are recyclable at DPW all week long, why should I come on a Saturday to bring them in? Don't wait until Saturday- come Monday through Friday, it's fast and easy! However, some residents find Saturday the ONLY day of the week they can get a helper to carry that heavy old TV...
- Books and Textiles are recyclable all over town, should I wait to bring them to DPW? Certainly not. Many of the collection bins around Town benefit worthy causes and organizations. Please support the business, nonprofit, school or religious organization of your choice. If you happen to be coming to the Recycling Center some Saturday and want to bring your books and old towels, we want to make that possible for you.
What about recycling items that contain multiple materials?
Please prepare ahead of time and bring in the pieces that are recyclable
For example:
What does the Recycling Center look like?
Just inside the DPW gate we create an area with drop off boxes for books, media and textiles. Then we set out blue bins with labels for some of the smaller electronic items people want to recycle. Finally, we set up a collection area for bulky rigid plastics and LOTS of plastic bags for collecting all that rigid foam that residents bring. Foam turns out to be the most common items coming in to our recycling center- keep it coming!

No food container foam (meat trays and take-out containers) please,
only rigid packing foam, the kind that snaps when you bend it.
