Important information about the 2020 Census

Due to concerns from the coronavirus (COVID-19), Town services for taking the census are postponed until further notice.

Post Date:02/20/2020 8:48 AM

Due to concerns from the coronavirus (COVID-19), the Town's census kiosk locations at Town Hall and the libraries will be postponed until further notice. Review the most recent communications from the Town regarding the response to COVID-19.

Complete Count Working Group

The Complete Count Working Group (CCWG) is a volunteer committee of Town staff and community representatives whose mission is to increase awareness and motivate residents to respond to the 2020 Census, ensuring that there is a complete count of Arlington residents. Getting an accurate count is important because census data determines how federal funding is allocated—particularly for programs that affect low-income residents, children, and seniors—and is used to determine Congressional, state, and local districts. Members of Arlington’s CCWG will help design outreach plans for hard-to-count areas or populations, raise community awareness of the census, communicate facts and dispel rumors about census data and how it is used, and encourage individuals to respond to the census by internet, mail or phone.

3/20/20 News Release about the 2020 Census

Between March 12 and 20, the Census Bureau will mail a letter invitation to every Arlington resident encouraging them to fill out their census form online; every household will have the option of responding online, by mail, or by phone.  Between March 16 and 24, all households will receive a reminder letter.

If a household has not responded by March 25, they will receive a series of reminder letters and postcards, and if they continue to not respond, and in-person visit by a Census worker.

Guidance for College Students

College students who typically live away from their family’s home and are no longer on campus on/before April 1, due to guidance from the school or public health authorities, should use their college address when responding to the Census. Census Bureau has stated that “per the Census Bureau’s residence criteria, in most cases students living away from home at school should be counted at school, even if they are temporarily elsewhere due to the COVID-19 pandemic.” (Source U.S. Census Bureau March 15, 2020 statement).

College students who live off campus and are no longer on or near campus on/before April 1, due to guidance from the school or public health authorities, should follow the Census Bureau instructions for Responding to the 2020 Census without a Census ID number.

Upcoming Events

The 2020 Census is Here! All Arlington households should have received a mailed invitation from the Census Bureau to complete the census.
