More than 320,000 Trips Counted on Minuteman Bikeway From July through October

Post Date:11/21/2019 4:30 PM
The Town is pleased to release data on usage of the Minuteman Bikeway. There were 322,241 Minuteman Bikeway trips over the past four months. This information was collected by a recently installed counter to help the Town understand Bikeway usage. The counter, installed on the Bikeway in June 2019 near the intersection with Swan Place, recorded approximately 81,400 trips in July; 87,300 trips in August; 90,000 trips in September; and 63,400 trips in October.  Around 2,600 trips are made on the Bikeway every day by people bicycling, running, walking, and rolling by various means. About 56% of trips on the Bikeway were made by people on bicycles, while 44% were made by pedestrians.

These data can be used for a variety of purposes, including planning new facilities, targeting maintenance activities, tracking usage trends, and more. For example, these data show that Sunday is typically the day of the week with the highest activity on the Bikeway, and Wednesday has the lowest activity, on average. Additionally, the counter data shows that about 20% of Bikeway activity on the weekdays occurs from 7:00-9:00 a.m., and another 20% occurs from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thus, activity on the Bikeway during typical commuting times accounts for about 40% of weekday Bikeway trips.

The automatic counter differentiates people walking and bicycling through the combination of a post-mounted passive infrared sensor and an inductive loop sensor embedded into the Bikeway pavement. The counter collects data on the volume of Bikeway users 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing for the analysis of Bikeway usage over consecutive days, weeks, months, seasons, or years. No personal information is collected with this equipment.

MassDOT funded the automatic counter equipment and installation in association with their MassTrails Bicycle/Pedestrian Counts Pilot Program. In addition to the Minuteman Bikeway, automatic counters have been installed on the Northern Strand Community Trail, Norwottuck Rail Trail, and Cape Cod Rail Trail. MassDOT has also created a MassTrails Bicycle/Pedestrian Counts Dashboard for the public to be able to view daily data from the four permanent counters. The Minuteman Bikeway is the most popular trail of the four, with 48% of total trips recorded by the four counters taking place on the Bikeway.

In September, volunteers coordinated by the Town of Arlington Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) and the Arlington Bicycle Advisory Committee (ABAC) performed a manual count on the Minuteman Bikeway to validate the data produced by the automatic counter. Volunteers tallied 2,773 trips on Tuesday, September 24, and 3,994 trips on Saturday, September 28, for twelve hours each day, from 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. The validation analysis found that the automatic counter logged 2,632 trips during the same period on September 24, a difference of 5%; and 3,536 trips during the same period on September 28, a difference of 11%. The lower counts recorded by the automatic counter can be the result of users walking or biking in tandem. Volunteers are also able to count children who may be carried or in a stroller, which the automatic counter cannot identify.

The Town has conducted counts at different points along the Bikeway since it was completed in Arlington in 1993. Arlington has counted users where the Bikeway crosses Swan Place on a weekday and weekend day in both May and September every year since 2011. This is the first year that the Town has had an automatic counter on the Bikeway that can collect data continuously and provide much more data than can be collected through manual counts. The Town will continue to complete manual counts at Swan Place and potentially other locations in the community.
