Arlington currently has 18,000 public trees which are cared for by the Natural Resources Division. On this page are some helpful links about Arlington's tree population and what to do if you suspect a Town tree is diseased or damaged, recommended trees for planting, and other tree related information.
If you would like to request a street tree to be planted on the street near your property you can do so by submitting a Tree Request via the Request/Answer Center (registration required).
If you would like to volunteer to take care of a young tree in Arlington through the Tree Committee's Adopt-A-Tree program, you can learn more about the program and sign up here.
For builders, please note Article 16 Tree Protection & Preservation Bylaw to see if you need a tree plan.
Tree Construction Guidelines and Sample Plan
Please note state regulation, Chapter 87, for public shade trees including definition, public hearings, and penalties for removing trees without following these regulations.
Pest Management
The Town’s Tree Warden works closely with the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) and neighboring cities and towns to determine or anticipate the presence of invasive species that may threaten Arlington trees. Whenever possible, trees are treated in advance to increase their chance of survival. Currently the Town is treating its inventory of healthy Ash trees against the Emerald Ash Borer. Read more about this program.
Tree Committee
The DPW also works with a tree committee. The Arlington Tree Committee was established in 2010 by the Arlington Board of Selectmen. The mission of the Committee is to promote the protection, planting, and care of trees in Arlington. Committee information is available here.
