At their October 13, 2021 meeting, the Arlington Select Board voted to approve the implementation of Modified Option 2: Bike Lanes for short-term improvements to the Mass Ave and Appleton Street/Appleton Place intersection and nearby corridor. Modified Option 2 includes elements of both Short-Term Option 1: Shared Lanes and Short-Term Option 2: Bike Lanes to include certain safety countermeasures while limiting on-street parking impacts on Mass Ave. The Town implemented most of the changes to the intersection and corridor in November 2021. Elements including the Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon and Speed Feedback signs will be installed at a later date.

The following documents include planview drawings of the Modified Option 2 that was implemented as well as the original options reviewed by the Mass Ave/Appleton Design Review Committee that were presented to the Select Board on September 13, 2021. The Committee originally recommended Short-Term Option 2 to the Board and also supported the Modified Option 2.

For information detailing discussions of the Committee around the different short-term options please see the Committee’s minutes on its Agenda & Minutes page.
